Hiring a land clearing service: What you should know

Land-clearing projects can seem intimidating for a first-timer.
How long will it take? Can you make money off the wood? Any regulations you should be aware of? Who can you trust to tell the truth and get the job done?

So many questions and few answers. The following tips will help:

  • Your goal determines how expensive and complex the project will be. For instance, you would need stump removal and rough grading if it’s for construction. You won’t need those if you’re simply clearing out a few trees for aesthetic value.
  • If it’s a construction project, check if you need a permit from your town’s building department. Contractors can help with this part.
  • A professional land clearing and tree removal service should be able to help estimate your timber’s value (if you want to make some money or offset costs). Or else, ask your local land agent to recommend a forester.
  • Ask prospective contractors which specific land clearing projects they’re more experienced in. Some are great for small backyard jobs but not the best for large-scale construction projects.
  • If it’s a large-scale construction project, ensure your contractor can do everything from land surveying to land grading and clearing.
  • Get inquisitive and ask contractors about their safety procedures. What safety equipment do they use? How do they plan for on-site emergencies?
  • Prioritize licensed and insured contractors, especially for large-scale projects. You want to avoid liability in case of any mishaps.

Land clearing FAQs

Will clearing my land make it more valuable?

Most of the time, yes. Land clearing can significantly improve your property’s value. Cleared lots are more attractive and easier to build structures on, making them more useful to prospective buyers.

But sometimes clearing land can also reduce its value. This depends on the location and what is on the land. For instance, removing the trees can devalue the land if your timber is quite valuable.

Can I clear land myself?

You probably can, if it’s a small project (like removing several trees in a small plot) and you have the minimal necessary equipment i,e, chainsaws, safety gear, and a tractor. But it’s still quite risky. There are still several factors to be considered.

Generally, land-clearing projects, especially large-scale construction types and those involving stump removal and excavation, are best left to the professionals. We have the necessary expertise and equipment (skid steers, backhoes, excavators, etc.) to guarantee a quick, successful project.

Can you minimize environmental damage?

Yes! As a company with passionate arborists, we take great care to reduce the environmental impact of our land clearing activities. We use only the proper equipment to minimize soil disturbance.

We try to be conscious of sensitive breeding seasons and avoid land clearing during these periods. With cooperative landowners, we do selective land clearing to preserve certain habitats and reduce soil erosion.

Are you fully insured?

Yes! We are fully insured and have worker’s compensation for our crew. We comply with all OSHA and ANSI standards to provide the safest work environment possible. We also provide a copy of our COI for every estimate.
