Professional Tree Pruning and Trimming that protects your trees

Tree trimming or pruning might be the most beneficial thing you do for your trees. It can equally be the most devastating. Depends on who does the job.

When done right, tree pruning can
  • Boost resistance to diseases and harsh weather
  • Deter invasive pests
  • Help spot dangerous infections early.
  • Prolong tree life
Conversely, the wrong cutting technique can cause severe damage and expose the tree to infestations.

DIY is never the best option for pruning or trimming. Protect your trees. Invest in certified and highly-equipped arborists who have cut trees in your area for over a decade. That’s us at Costa Tree Service. We operate throughout Hartland, Oconomowoc, Delafield, and NW Waukesha County, WI.

When should you prune trees?

Late winter is generally the best time to prune trees in Wisconsin. Because the trees are dormant during this period, they are less susceptible to diseases when cut. Dormant trees also have fewer leaves, which makes pruning easier.

The prime pruning period also depends on the tree species. Oak, for instance, is best trimmed from November to March to prevent oak wilt. May through summer is ideal for maple trees.

If you’re considering ornamental or maintenance pruning, give us a call. Our tree arborists will provide the expert advice you need.

6 warning signs your trees need to be pruned

Tree-Trimming-Service
If you spot any of the following signs, your tree is a potential hazard. Don’t hesitate to call your local tree company:
  • The tree has dead branches. Worse if they are large and close to a building. Dead branches are brittle and can fall off without warning.
  • Branches are too close to power lines.
  • In some cases, incredibly dense foliage and lots of thick branches can be a problem. Trees like this can be quite hazardous during storms.
  • Tree is too large for your yard, and several overhanging branches are above your roof or near your windows.
  • There are diseased or infested limbs. These must be cut off quickly to prevent the disease from spreading and weakening other parts of the tree.
  • Branches crossing the trunk, or other branches, also need to be removed. These will inevitably lead to decay over time and thus compromise the tree’s health.
Branch removal can be dangerous. There is a substantial risk of damage to people and property without the right equipment and expertise.

At Costa, we use lifts, grapplers, and tree rigging equipment to maintain minimal contact and make sure the branches land as safely as possible. We are also a comprehensively insured tree cutting service, so rest assured you’re in no danger of liability.

Tree Pruning FAQs

What’s the difference between tree trimming and pruning?

People use these terms interchangeably, but our arborists prune trees.

Trimming is typically done on a smaller scale. It involves shaving off branches and shrubs to promote a healthier, more attractive appearance.

Pruning is done to prevent hazards, protect the tree, and deal with damaged or diseased limbs. It’s more complicated and dangerous as it involves removing larger or precariously placed branches.

Do you clean up when done?

Yes! We clean up nicely or haul away every piece of debris, unless you request otherwise. We like to make it seem as if we were never there!

How much does your tree trimming/pruning service cost?

We can’t mention a standard rate as every customer receives a custom estimate. Each job is unique—there are multiple factors that determine every estimate we provide.

Do I need to be home when you're working on my trees?

This depends on you. We’re perfectly fine with working in your absence. You will get home to a completed job that will leave a smile on your face.

Do you give estimates over the phone?

Unfortunately, we can’t. Tree projects vary as several factors affect the nature of each project—from the logistics of moving the equipment onsite to the skilled workers needed. Pictures might work sometimes, but we typically need to see the tree and environs to determine an accurate price.
